What is hypnotherapy and how can it help?

Hypnotherapy, as its name suggests, combines hypnosis with therapy.

An alternative term is clinical hypnosis, which again emphasises the use of hypnotic techniques in a clinical environment - not necessarily a hospital or doctor's surgery, but one where a condition is identified and treated.

Many people find they have problems arising from unknown sources, whether these problems be physical (for example, IBS) or psychological (for example, insomnia). Clinical hypnosis is a way of treating these conditions by creating change at the unconscious level where they originate. Hypnotherapy is creative change.

The hypnotherapist utilises naturally-occurring trance states to create a state of mind both receptive to and conducive for change. You may have experienced such a state of mind when driving and not noticing the miles as they pass, or when becoming absorbed in a book or film. Although of course these are not hypnotic states (hypnotic eye closure would be rather dangerous if it happened at the wheel!), they show the capacity for absorption and dissociation in everyday life, two key aspects in hypnosis.

This is accompanied by a shift into a state of bodily relaxation, similar to that experienced when on the edge of sleep. Again, this is a comparison to illustrate, as this relaxed yet alert state of mind and body lasts far longer in hypnosis. In that state, new learning can take place as suggestions are made for creative change.

Medical conditions must be diagnosed by your GP. I will not, and can not, carry out any diagnosis. I am happy to work with your GP to treat conditions such as IBS - in fact, many GPs recognise that clinical hypnosis is one of the only treatments that IBS responds to, and that includes changes in diet and lifestyle.

Please note: if you are epileptic, or have been diagnosed with clinical depression, hypnotherapy is not suitable for you.
Also, if you wear contact lenses, it is best if you remove them and come wearing your glasses, if possible.
